- Plan and prepare for shunting operation
- Select, fit and use personal protective equipment according to workplace requirements
- Identify and report hazards and damage or faults in bins and equipment to supervisor
- Confirm shunting requirements with supervisor
- Locate and prepare vehicles and equipment according to workplace procedures
- Identify rolling stock movements, availability and locations to determine appropriate siding or track locations for vehicle placement
- Carry out shunting control procedures
- Use points, levers, switches, signals and line of sight communications to assist the control of rolling stock movement
- Use hand, light and radio shunting commands that conform with operational and statutory requirements
- Check consignment notes or tickets and locate and sort bins according to marshalling requirements
- Couple and uncouple rolling stock according to workplace procedures
